After Ingres

This picture is based on a lost painting by Ingres. A Daguerreotype made in Ingres' studio in 1852 shows the painting which is of Ingres's first wife, Madeleine Chapelle. The photograph was unknown until it was found in 1993 in Ingres' desk in the Ingres Museum in Montauban, France.
